On Stolen Pontiacs

My Old car was just recovered by the Pittsburgh Police in the Hill District.

Better late then never.

Thoughts On Great Hackers

Paul Graham has written a very popular essay, titled Great Hackers.

Eric Sink has issued a rebuttal of sorts titled Great Hacker != Great Hire.

They're both good reads, if you're into reading programmer's blogs.

High Praise

Time for a patented Anecdote:

Arriving late at my apartment sunday, after a long weekend of birthday celebrations, I get a phone call from some friends, Jason and Lumi. They're drinking, and as usual, when they drink, they watch their wedding video. I was apparently, in their words, "something else" on the video. So they were calling to let me know that it might be a while before I get a thank you note because they're trying to figure out what exactly to write in it. I was the icing on the cake at the reception. Schmoozing with family members, convincing people to cut loose, getting people out onto the dance floor, and most importantly, not hogging the limelight. When it came time to focus everything on bridge and groom, I was the attentive guy leading the applause.

And now, with something like 6-8 inches of snow on the ground, and freezing rain on its way tomorrow night, the idea of visiting for new years doesn't sound too shabby.

And as Lumi put it, "You're allowed to bring any girl you're banging."

15 minutes of fame not over.

My soapbox article was mentioned in The Command Line podcast #16, which is syndicated on the iTunes Podcast Directory.

Basically, he agreed with all my points, except the cube thing.
I feel I'm going to have to clarify my position to "one of those gray areas".

Re-surfacing

I'm back after what is probably a two week absence.
I'm hoping at this point that my 15 minutes of fame are over.

Not that I didn't have some good offline discussions with employees from Google and Yahoo. And one person, Jason, who I no doubt bored to death through email, thought high enough of my article to discuss career advice with me.

Anyway, some time during this month I turned the big ole 24. It would be a lackluster event except for my famous sexy parties. As always, free booze usually motivates people to show up to your social invitations. Unlike always, this year I wasn't in the mood to put up with much, so most fair weather friends didn't get an invite.

As a gift, I received the "I only support gay marriage if both chicks are hot" t-shirt.

So besides skipping my daily work out at the gym most of last week, and giving myself a hangover the past two weekends, its mostly been flying below the radar. And indulging in an ebay addiciton. If you look in the right places on ebay, you can find things you want for half the price of retail. For example, Dave Thomas' "The Pragmatic Programmer." Or, a 21 inch hand detailed chrome hookha from imported from egypt. Or a K&N Air Filter to last for the life of your car.

Things I haven't been doing:
Paying attention to the news.
Working on side projects.
Looking for new Music.
Blogging.
Writing Articles for "Soapbox".

Holy Crap, They weren't kidding about the /. effect

Right now, the server hosting my blogs is probably melting.
Thankfully, some other sites would like to mirror my article. Sys-Con.com is one of those sites.

You can find my article here: http://sys-con.com/read/137855.htm

F U C K Y E A H

My article "When to leave your first tech job" made it onto Slashdot.org.

I am now being hammered by comments. But still, its nice being post worthy.
Oh, and this now means my co-workers know that I have a blog.
Damn that Murphy!
